SoNG: Verity

Verity
Written by Helen Chaya aka Friedman, Average Dyke Band, 1985

They tried to put you away this time
For speaking the truth, for speaking your mind
In the face of so many who are blind
To the light that you envision
They call you crazy, abnormal, insane
For refusing to deny your anger and pain
And they’d rather pump some poison death in your veins
Than admit to their own delusions.

Verity, truth be your name
You no longer have to feel any shame
We have the power, the strength to reclaim our lives
To reclaim our lives

Drawing your energy up from the earth
Knowing the dark space that comes before birth
The inner powers we’re calling to stir
From the depths where they lay hidden
And you speak in a language they label unclear
Then they try to shut you us so they don’t have to hear
The wisdom you cry as it burns in their ears
Leaves them smoldering in confusion

Each of us still must learn to unlearn
The man-made history and lies that she’s heard
The empty words and contradictions they’ve turned
into laws to keep us imprisoned
Laws to keep us imprisoned.

They tried to put you away this time
For speaking the truth, for speaking your mind
In the face of so many who are blind
To the light that you envision
But your sisters are coming to bring you back home
You don’t have to feel afraid or alone
We are rising together to grow in love
We have grown in love

Look what society’s done to our souls
To shut us in walls and to cast us in molds
Trying to break to break us but we’re coming out whole
With the love and strength within us
With the love and strength within us.
